The Impact of Mobile Phone Use on Male Infertility

A meta-study conducted by the University of Geneva, along with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, found an association between frequent use of mobile phones and lower sperm concentration and total sperm count. However, there was no evidence of sperm motility( movement) or morphology (shape) getting affected. It was found that men who used
their phones more than 20 times a day had comparatively lower sperm count and concentration than men who used their mobile once a week. So, it was concluded that men who use their mobile regularly are at a 30% risk of having a decline in sperm count and concentration than fertile men, defined according to WHO. This decrease could be due to the heat produced because of signal transmission that impacts the sperm rate. The reason is not conclusive, but there is a strong association between the two that has been found.
Other findings of this research
In this same research, a shocking conclusion has been made. It has been said that the advancement of 2G to 3G and 3G to 4G has a decreasing association with low sperm rates, respectively. Though it might sound ironic, the power emitted when using 2G is higher than the power emitted to transmit signals, which is said to have a low impact on sperm health.
The second conclusion was the place where the mobile is kept when not in use- trouser pockets, belt carriers or jacket pockets, was not a determining factor and also that it had no impact on the sperm count.
So, these were the conclusions and findings made in this research. Though there were no conclusive results, this research has given an idea and more questions about which answers will be found in future research.
